Los Angeles is one of the largest electronic music markets in the world, and it has two parallel scenes operating simultaneously: the commercial circuit of club nights and arena shows, and an underground network that runs mostly invisible to the mainstream. This is a guide to the second one.
The Commercial Circuit vs. The Underground
LA's commercial electronic music scene — Factory 93 at Exchange, massive festival bookings at Hollywood Park, Insomniac productions — is sophisticated, well-run, and features genuinely good music. But it operates on economics that require large crowds and safe programming choices. The underground exists precisely because some of the most interesting music and the most genuine community experiences don't fit into those economics.
The Neighborhoods That Matter
The LA underground is spread across several geographic hubs. Downtown LA (particularly the Arts District and industrial east side) has the highest concentration of warehouse-style venues. Eagle Rock and Glassell Park have a more intimate club scene. South LA has historically been where warehouse events happen that don't get covered by press. The San Fernando Valley has its own club circuit that rarely crosses into the press conversation.
How the Event Calendar Works
Unlike major clubs that publish calendars months in advance, underground LA events typically appear 2–4 weeks before they happen, with final venue confirmation often coming 48–72 hours before the event. This is partly practical (venue agreements for one-off warehouse events are often finalized late) and partly deliberate — it filters out casual attendees and maintains the intimate character of the events.
What's Happening in 2026
The LA underground in 2026 is seeing strong techno programming from the Factory 93/Exchange ecosystem, an active bass music circuit centered around warehouse events in DTLA and the Arts District, and a growing house music scene reconnecting to the city's deeper roots. Organizers like Control Room and Together As One represent different points on the spectrum from underground to festival scale.
